Fall sports coming right up

September is just days away, and that means that local cross-country, football, soccer and volleyball teams are heading into the competitive portions of their seasons. See below for season opener information for Forest Grove, Banks and Gaston.

Forest Grove

Hall of Fame tickets on sale

Tickets to this year’s induction banquet for the Forest Grove High School Athletic Hall of Fame are now available for purchase.

This year’s banquet is slated for 6 p.m. on Oct. 4 at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains. Tickets may be purchased for $35 per person at the high school athletic department office or by phone at 503-359-2437.

This year’s inductees are former athletes Robb Bauer (swimming, class of 1980), DeeAnn (Hetzel) Henderson (softball, class of 1986), Teena Shull Nelson (softball, class of 1987) and David Schiffer (track and field, class of 1988), as well as former coach and teacher Elma Hewitt and Citizens for a New Athletic Stadium, which spearheaded the efforts to build the high school’s stadium in the 1970s and 1980s.

All individuals and business who played a role in the construction of the stadium are encouraged to attend so they can be recognized and are requested to contact the athletics office.

PSU Vikings head west for football, women’s soccer

Portland State University football and women’s soccer is coming to Washington County. The PSU football squad is slated to play its home opener at Hillsboro Stadium on Sept. 6, while the Vikings women’s soccer team is staging all of its home contests at the facility.

Football will open the season at 7:15 p.m. on Sept. 6 against Western Oregon. The rest of its home contests will take place at Providence Park in Portland. Former Century star Alex Sirois is a sophomore offensive lineman with the Vikings.

The women’s soccer team opened the season by going 1-0-1 in a home tournament last weekend. The rest of the home schedule is as follows: Oregon, Sept. 12, 1 p.m.; San Jose State, Sept. 21, 11 a.m.; Eastern Washington, Oct. 3, 1 p.m.; Montana, Oct. 5, 1 p.m.; Weber State, Oct. 12, 1 p.m.; Idaho, Oct. 26, 1 p.m.; Sacramento State, Oct. 31, 1 p.m.

The Vikings roster includes junior Cori Bianchini, a Glencoe grad who ranked sixth last season in the Big Sky Conference with five goals, as well as three former Westview players. Twins Kelsey and Kayla Henningsen — the latter the 2013 Big Sky defensive player of the year — are back for their senior seasons, and Jadyn McMillan joins PSU as a freshman midfielder.
