Car wash will benefit dance team, Alzheimer's

Sandy High School's dance team, The Elevations, is joining forces with Marquis Care-Centennial to host a benefit car wash in Gresham from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 29.

The Elevations will wash cars at Marquis Care at Centennial on Southeast 202nd Avenue between Southeast Stark and Northwest Burnside Road. Donations will go toward a fund to pay for the team to attend a dance camp in Gresham, as well as to benefit the Alzheimer's Association.

Red Cross needs blood

The American Red Cross blood supply has reached emergency levels with 50,000 fewer donations than expected in June.

This shortfall leaves the Red Cross with half the readily available blood products on hand now than this time last year. All blood types are needed to meet patient demand this summer.

"We need donors to make appointments in the coming days and weeks to help us ensure that all patient blood needs can be met," said Steve Stegeman, CEO of the American Red Cross Pacific Northwest Blood Services Region, serving Washington and Oregon. "Each pint of whole blood can help save more than one life."

Fire guts apartment

Fire caused $88,000 worth of damage to a Gresham apartment early Saturday, June 23.

Portland and Gresham firefighters responded to the 12:24 a.m. report of a fire at the Meadow Park East Apartments in the 17000 block of Southeast Powell Boulevard.

Crews extinguished the two-alarm fire, which began in a second-story unit, and stopped it from spreading to five adjacent apartments.

The apartment where the fire started is a total loss. Another unit sustained water damage from the fire-fighting effort.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
