Thomas L. Swanton

Sept. 14, 1934-June 19, 2012

Gresham resident Thomas L. Swanton, 77, died Tuesday, June 19, holding the hand of his wife, Sue.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 30, at First Baptist Church, 224 W. Powell Blvd.

Tom was born Sept. 14, 1934, in San Diego to Robert and Mary (Cotter) Swanton. Tom grew up in Boston and was a lifelong Red Sox fan. Tom served in the Marine Corps in the Korean War.

Tom moved to Oregon in the 1960s, where he met and married Gloria Gaulke. They were later divorced.

Tom worked for Pacific Power & Light for 21 years as a long-haul truck driver; he held the company safety record.

On Aug. 27, 1994, Tom married Sue Harlan. They resided in the Gresham community since 1994.

Tom enjoyed sports as an athlete in his youth and as a spectator his whole life. He loved classic cars and trucks, travel, good food and telling jokes and stories about his life adventures. He was patriotic and proudly flew his American flag.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Tahnee Swanton of Gresham; stepdaughter, Tammy Doss of Gresham; stepson, Jeff Gaylord of Gresham; and his golden retriever, Ginger.

Perle Delos

"Del" Hartman

June 23, 1929-June 19, 2012

East Portland resident Perle Delos "Del" Hartman died Tuesday, June 19, at his home. He was 82.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 28, at East Hill Church Youth Center, 50 N.W. Fifth St. Committal with military honors will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, June 29, at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 S.E. Mount Scott Blvd., Portland.

Del was born June 23, 1929, in Delano, Calif., to William and Gladys (Norris) Hartman. Del was raised in and around Salem, Coos Bay and Portland. He graduated from Grant High School in 1947. After six years in the Oregon National Guard, Del served two years of active duty in the Army from December 1954 to November 1956. He spent time both stateside and in Germany, working as a specialist in the motor pool.

In 1951, Del married Gladys Perry. Gladys preceded him in death in 1981.

Del began working at an early age, obtaining a job as a farmhand the summer following the eighth grade. A few of his subsequent positions included working at a plant nursery, furniture factory, fruit-processing plant and lumber mill, as well as driving a taxi cab. However, he spent the majority of his career at Standard Oil/Chevron Asphalt Refinery in Northwest Portland. In 1986, he retired from Chevron as a shift supervisor after 35 years of service.

Del enjoyed taking road trips, such as to the Oregon coast and casinos. He also liked woodworking and making gifts for others, fixing cars and completing home-repair projects. His other hobbies included reading, doing crossword puzzles, going to garage sales, recounting family stories and spending time with family.

Survivors include his companion of 23 years, Patricia Ferguson; son, Gary Hartman of Portland; daughters, Cathy Earl of Albuquerque, N.M., Tracy Yates of Gresham and Becky Hartman of Gresham; sister, Barbara Brandt of Donald; and many grandchildren.

Frederick Henry Williams

Sept. 10, 1938-June 11, 2012

Damascus resident Frederick Henry Williams, 73, died Monday, June 11.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Call Cornerstone Funeral Services at 503-637-5020 for information.

Fred was born Sept. 10, 1938, in Portland to Henry and Freda Williams. He graduated from Gresham High School and from Portland State University in 1969.

Fred worked as a certified public accountant, retiring in 2010. He was divorced. He was a member of Associated General Contractors.

Fred loved to travel, especially to Alaska for fishing. He also loved playing with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his son, Russell Williams of Damascus; brothers, Jack Williams of Damascus and Jerry Williams of Oregon City; and three grandchildren.

Jeffrey Ross White

Oct. 10, 1946-May 25, 2012

Gresham resident Jeffrey Ross White died Friday, May 25, in Portland. He was 65.

A memorial service was held at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home.

Jeff was born Oct. 10, 1946, in Vallejo, Calif., to William and Wanda White. He was raised in El Paso, Texas, where he became an Eagle Scout. As an adult, Jeff got a job surveying a natural gas pipeline in Washington while it was under construction. He loved Oregon so much that he moved there permanently.

On Aug. 12, 1972, he married Genny Aamot in Oregon City.

Jeff worked at a steel mill and wood mill before starting his career as a computer technician. There was nothing he couldn't fix around the house, from cars to plumbing. Jeff enjoyed being outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He especially enjoyed his Harley-Davidson and often took his grandkids for a ride.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Bill Schritter of New Mexico, Chad White of Gresham and Jason White of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter, Elizabeth White of Gresham; brother, Greg White of California; sister, Lou Anne Boone of El Paso; and three grandchildren.

Almeda Bertha Constance Vejar

April 24, 1916-June 1, 2012

Former Gresham resident Almeda Bertha Constance Vejar died Friday, June 1, in Portland. She was 96.

Interment was at Sunnyside Pioneer Cemetery.

Almeda was born April 24, 1916, in Gresham to Benjamin and Elva (Deardorff) Johnson, the oldest of seven children. She graduated from Gresham High School.

Almeda married Manuel Vejar, who preceded her in death. She was a homemaker.

Almeda crocheted and knit thousands of hats and scarves for East County Toy N Joy Makers for 14 years.

Survivors include her daughter, Joyce Ann McCauley of Red Bluff, Calif.; sisters, Thelma LaPontic of Portland, Lois Rosas of Bakersfield, Calif., and Lucille Fussell of Gresham; brother, Jerry Johnson of Tennessee; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Anton "Tony" Flack

Jan. 11, 1926-June 21, 2012.

Fairview resident Anton "Tony" Flack died Thursday, June 21. He was 86.

Services are pending.
