Three teens arrested for shooting people with paintball gun

Troutdale police arrested three people Saturday, July 14, for allegedly shooting up to 11 random people with a paintball gun as they drove around the Troutdale area.

Police arrested Daniel James Schmitt, 18, of Gresham, Alexander Eugene Penner, 18, of Portland and a 17-year-old male juvenile from Portland on multiple charges of unlawful use of a weapon, assault, reckless endangering, criminal mischief and conspiracy.

Police said the suspects reportedly shot at nine people while they were in their front yards. Two other victims were shot at as they were leaving a restaurant at Southeast Stark Street and Troutdale Road. One victim received an injury to his back, and a victim who was leaving the restaurant was hit in the arm.

Police responded around 11:07 p.m. and stopped the suspect vehicle at Stark Street and Troutdale Road within minutes of the 9-1-1 call.

Officers took the three male suspects into custody and seized a loaded Tippmann 98 Custom paintball rifle, a 20-ounce CO2 tank, 20 paintballs and a paintball loader.

Schmitt and Penner were lodged at the Multnomah County Jail. The juvenile was taken to Juvenile Detention Center.

The suspects reportedly told police they were house sitting in Troutdale and saw the paintball gun in the garage.
