The manager of a Gresham storage facility opened a unit to investigate a foul odor this weekend and discovered the decomposing body of a missing young woman.

Anisa Marie Swearingen, 18, who lived on Northeast 71st Avenue and Prescott Street in Portland, was last seen on July 12, said Sgt. Claudio Grandjean, Gresham Police spokesman. She was reported missing on Wednesday, July 18.

At 4:10 p.m. Saturday, July 21, the manager of Money Saver Mini Storage in the 19200 block of Northeast Halsey Street called police to report finding the body after opening a unit to investigate the foul odor coming from it.

Gresham and Portland police are investigating. Anyone who saw Swearingen between July 12 and 18 is asked to call the Gresham police tip line at 503-618-2719.

Swearingen is described as a petite white female who was 4 feet 11 inches tall and 115 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. She had several tattoos including musical notes on her neck, the name “Shiloh” on the back of her neck and several tattoos on her right hand.

She was wearing blue jeans and a tan sweater when she was last seen.

According to jail records, Swearingen was arrested three times this year. In February she was booked for methamphetamine possession. In May she was arrested on a warrant for failing to appear in court on charges of possession and delivery of methamphetamine, as well as on charges of illegal possession of a firearm and attempting to tamper with evidence.

Most recently, she was in jail July 1-4 for failing to appear on the previous charges but was released because of overcrowding.

As for how the woman died, “We’re looking at all possibilities,” Grandjean said.

Police also are not disclosing details on the person who is renting the unit, other than to say the person is not behind bars, he said.
