Missing hiker found at Multnomah Falls

Multnomah County sheriff’s deputies rescued a Wilsonville man who went missing overnight Saturday and Sunday, July 21-22, on the Multnomah Falls trail.

Steven Page, 58, was reported missing by his girlfriend, Heather Kelly of Wilsonville, around 10:45 p.m. Saturday. Kelly reportedly told deputies that Page decided to take an unplanned hike on the trail. She said they had arrived around 8 p.m. at Multnomah Falls, which they had never seen before and had no intention of hiking.

Kelly said she waited two hours for Page to return before calling police. Page was wearing a T-shirt, shorts and boots, and had no survival equipment such as water, a flashlight or cell phone.

Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue teams were deployed on trails at about 2 a.m. At about 2:35 a.m., one of the teams found Page walking down the main trail.

Page reportedly said he was having a difficult time finding the trail due to the darkness. He was uninjured and escorted to the Multnomah Falls Lodge.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said visitors to the Columbia Gorge should remember to carry the proper equipment before venturing out on the trails, including water, food, compass, extra clothes, a flashlight and extra batteries, cell phone, first aid kit and a signaling device such as a whistle. Let someone who is not on the hike with you know where you are going, what trails you plan on hiking and when you should return.
