Troutdale mayor faces challenger in election

Troutdale City Councilor Doug Daoust has filed to run for mayor against incumbent Mayor Jim Kight in the November election.

The Troutdale mayor’s race so far is one of the few competitive council races in the cities of Troutdale, Fairview and Wood Village. Most current councilors have filed to run for reelection.

The deadline in each city for potential candidates to file is 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28. Information on how to file for the city council is available at each City Hall and on each city’s website.

Here is a rundown of the upcoming council elections and who has filed to run as of Thursday, July 26.

Troutdale

Kight, a property manager and portrait/commercial photographer, was elected mayor in 2008 and previously served on the City Council from 1994-2004 and 2006-2008.

Daoust, an assistant director of state and private forestry for the U.S. Forest Service, serves as council president. He has been on the council for 16 years.

In addition to the mayor’s race, the council seats now held by Councilors Eric Anderson, Glenn White and Daoust are up for election. White and Anderson said they are planning to run for reelection.

City Recorder Debbie Stickney said a few citizens are gathering signatures but have not yet completed the filing process.

Fairview

In Fairview, the only competitive City Council race so far is between Councilor Ken Quinby and Dr. Steven Prom, a Fairview chiropractor.

Quinby, who is self-employed in property management and maintenance, was appointed to the City Council in 1998 and reelected in 2004 and 2008.

Prom, owner of Springwater Chiropractic Clinic, serves on two city advisory committees. Earlier this year, Prom sought an open seat on the council following the death of Councilor Larry Cooper.

Councilors Dan Kreamier, Barbara Jones and Brian Cooper also are up for election. All three of them have filed for reelection and were not facing any challengers.

Wood Village

Councilors T. Scott Harden and Timothy Clark have filed to run for reelection and are not facing any challengers.

Mayor Patricia Smith, whose council seat is up for election, said she plans to file for reelection and is gathering signatures.

Since the mayor is selected by city councilors, Smith said the council will have to select a mayor after the election, adding she could be chosen again.
