Party like a pioneer at Philip Foster Farm

Enjoy a night of history, food and fun at the Philip Foster Farm Barn Dance and Pioneer Dinner from 5-9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at Philip Foster Farm 29912 S.E. Highway 211, Eagle Creek.

The event will feature an 1857 wedding re-enactment for Josiah Burnett and Lucy Foster (daughter of Philip Foster). Supper will include beef and chicken, roasted potatoes, cole slaw, rolls and Marionberry cobbler. There will be live folk music and a silent auction. All proceeds go to restoring the 1860 Philip Foster home, which is on the list of Oregon’s top 10 most endangered historic places.

Tickets to the Aug. 25 event are $20 for adults and $10 for children under 12. For those who want to skip dinner and just dance from 6-9 p.m., the cost is $10. Dinner reservations are required. Reserve online at philipfosterfarm.com or call 503-637-6324.

Recovery support group meets in Rockwood

Dual Diagnosis Anonymous, a nonprofit organization, offers a support group based in Rockwood for those who have a substance abuse and mental-health disorder.

The group meets from 6-7 p.m. every Friday in the Rockwood Building at 124 N.E. 181st Ave., one block north of the 182nd Avenue MAX station.

This informal, peer-lead support group is designed specifically for those in recovery and who need the support of others facing the same challenges in their day-to-day lives.

The only requirement for participation is a desire to develop healthy drug- and alcohol-free lifestyles.

Everything shared in the room stays in the room. There is no cost, and no appointment or prior notice is required.

Learn about age-friendly Portland area

The average age of Portland-metro area residents is increasing, leading to questions on if the region is ready for this change and how it will affect housing, transportation and other issues for people of all ages.

The public can learn more at “Toward an Age-Friendly Portland,” a meeting that will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, at Metro Regional Center, 600 N.E. Grand Ave., Portland.

Metro Councilor Shirley Craddick, who represents East County, will join Margaret Neal, director of Portland State University’s Institute on Aging, and Alan DeLaTorre, project manager for the Global Age-Friendly Cities project, to talk about the region’s history of and context for planning for an aging society.

Matt Wickstrom, district planner with the Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, will discuss how Portland is incorporating age-friendly strategies.

Students in PSU’s Master of Urban and Regional Planning program will present their findings from a recently completed vision for an age-friendly Portland and how subsequent policy recommendations might apply to the larger region.
