Filing deadline looms

Damascus residents have only two more weeks to file to run for four up-for-grabs council seats before the Tuesday, Aug. 28, deadline.

Three of the seats are contested races. The fourth — Position 2 now filled by Barb Ledbury, who is not running for re-election — has only one applicant, Don Arbuckle.

Also of note, only one incumbent is running for re-election on the Nov. 6 general election ballot.

Mayor Steve Spinnett is running against City Councilor Mary Wescott for the mayor’s seat. Wescott’s father-in-law, Dee Wescott, was the city’s first mayor; he died in 2009. The next year, voters elected Mary Wescott to the city council.

Councilors Marlo Dean, Position 1, and Diana Helm, Position 6, are not running for re-election.

Kevin Reedy, a construction project manager, and Bill Wehr, who is retired from a career in financial services, are running for Position 1.

Dan Phegley, an insurance agent and founder of Ask Damascus, and James De Young, a teacher, are running for Position 6.

City Council seats are at-large, meaning they don’t represent any particular geographic zone in the city, so anyone in the city can run for them. Councilors serve for four years, and the mayor serves a two-year term.

The deadline to file to run for City Council is 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28. Candidates must be registered voters, which also requires them to be 18 years old, and must have lived in the city for the year before the election. Candidates also can’t be employed by the city.

Packets for candidates, including a link to applications, are available through the city’s website, damascusoregon.gov. Candidates also can pick up packets at Damascus City Hall, 19920 S.E. Highway 212.
