Corbett says final goodbye to Woody

by: JIM CLARK - Woody Davis' homemade wooden casket, with the International Harvester logo on it, is transported in his beloved 1967 International Harvester pickup truck Tuesday, Aug. 14.The funeral service for Sherwood “Woody” Davis, a lifelong Corbett resident and businessman, was held Tuesday, Aug. 14, at Good Shepherd Community Church in Boring. Woody died Sunday, Aug. 5, at age 69.

Woody was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease last year, and his acceptance of it led his family to set about planning a memorable funeral service that would best honor him for the role he played in their lives and in his community. They built him a special coffin and restored his work vehicle, a 1967 International Harvester, to transport his coffin to Corbett Community Church. From there they loaded it on a covered wagon and took it to Corbett Cemetery.

Woody’s story gained some national attention. After his story appeared in The Outlook, Woody was featured in Reader’s Digest and on the CBS Evening News for an “On the Road” segment in late January.

CBS News Correspondent Steve Hartman, who spent a day in Corbett with Woody and his family and friends, described Woody as a “community angel” in his story because of the thousands of good deeds he had done for the community.
