Troutdale teen rescues child from burning home

A 14-year-old boy climbed a ladder to a second-story window and rescued a young child from a Troutdale house fire Monday night.

Marcos Ugarte and his father Eduardo came outside after hearing screams and noticed the house, located around 25th Street and Hewitt Avenue, ablaze.

After the father at the house yelled his young son was trapped inside, Ugarte placed a ladder against the second-story window, broke the window screen, grabbed the child and brought him to safety.

"He did a remarkable job and kept his composure," Mark Maunder, battalion chief of Gresham Fire Deparment, said.

Maunder said the fire broke out sometime before 10 p.m. Monday. Five family members had already escaped the house safely except the boy.

"A lot of things went right," Maudner said. "This was a good outcome that could have been a tragic situation."

The fire, which caused significant damage, is still under investigation.
