Six escape injury when tree falls on car, truck

A Troutdale woman and a family from Damascus had a close call Friday, Oct. 5, when wind snapped a large tree, sending it crashing across Highway 99E at the Clackamas River Bridge between Oregon City and Gladstone.

The tree fell on the south end of the bridge at 12:18 p.m. as Susan D. Medford, 42, of Troutdale was driving a 2006 Pontiac Grant Am northbound on the highway and swerved to avoid it, but the tree struck the windshield, said Lt. Gregg Hastings, Oregon State Police spokesman.

Medford and the woman who was a passenger in the car were not seriously injured.

Another northbound vehicle — a 2008 Ford F350 pickup driven by Troy Portash, 43, of Damascus — also sustained extensive damage to the passenger compartment when the tree hit the trucks' right front corner and windshield.by: CONTRIBUTED PHOTO: OREGON STATE POLICE - Wind snapped a tree, which fell onto two vehicles, including this pickup. The tree was estimated to be between 18 and 24 inches in diameter. It blocked all lanes for an hour before the Oregon Department of Transportation removed the tree, cleaned up debris and partially re-opened the highway.
