Multnomah County search and rescue team members escorted a 43-year-old Beaverton man out of the woods early Friday morning after he spent a cold night near Horsetail Falls.

Sheriff’s deputies said Scott Morrison was found at about 1:42 a.m. on a steep, muddy trail. Morrison had been lost since Thursday afternoon, when he went hiking wearing blue jeans, a T-shirt and a light jacket. Deputies said he had water but no food.

Morrison was shaken and cold, but in good condition when deputies found him at a campfire he built to stay warm, using his backpack and hat as fuel.

Morrison said he had gone on a hike near Oneonta Falls Thursday, the same day hike he had done seven years earlier. He forgot about the daylight saving time change, which meant it became dark at about 5 p.m.

Fearing he would fall in the muddy, steep terrain, Morrison called emergency dispatchers at about 5:40 p.m. to ask for help. Morrison told deputies he did not have a flashlight and was unable to see the terrain as he tried to make his way down the trail.

Morrison had become lost at about the 3,000-foot level near Horsetail Falls. Temperatures dropped during the night to about 35 degrees, and light rain and snow was expected in the area.
