Johnson reportedly knocked on the door of his ex-girlfriend's apartment in the 2900 block of Northeast 23rd Street at about 3 a.m. Monday, May 13, according to a police report. When nobody answered the door, he kicked the door in hit the woman in the arm.

When the woman threatened to call the police, Johnson reportedly brandished a rather unique weapon — a can opener that he allegedly stole from his ex-girlfriend's brother's car, along with a handicapped parking placard.

Johnson then hit the woman's arm and choked her with his hands until her brother intervened. The brother and suspect fought and wrestled in the apartment until police arrived. Officers noted that Johnson used racial epithets against them and struggled with police as they placed him in a patrol car. Once inside the vehicle, Johnson kicked out the dome light. Police bound Johnson's feet together for the ride to the justice center in downtown Portland.
