Out-of-control driver slams into cop car

A Gresham police officer is OK after being hit in his patrol car by an erratic motorist.

Officer Mike Erickson was one of two officers responding to a report of a disturbance in a parking lot in the 1300 block of Northeast 181st Avenue at about 2:20 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, when Erickson's vehicle was hit, said Lt. Claudio Grandjean, Gresham Police spokesman.by: COURTESY: MULTNOMAH COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE - Chelsea Schallock

After finding no disturbance at the scene, the officers were getting ready to leave when they noticed a Ford Mustang speeding out of the parking lot and doing "cookies" in the middle of 181st Avenue. Erickson went toward the parking lot exit to stop the vehicle and put the patrol car's emergency lights on. That's when the Mustang came toward his car, fishtailing and spinning out of control, Grandjan said.

Erickson quickly put the patrol car into reverse to avoid the oncoming Mustang, but the spinning vehicle hit the patrol car.

The Mustang continued through the parking lot at a high rate of speed "driving over curbs and shrubs in an effort to escape," Grandjean said. It finally crashed into a tree in the parking lot and the driver fled on foot.

Police apprehended Chelsea Leann Schallock, 26, of Aloha after a short foot chase. She is being held on $15,000 bail at the Multnomah County Detention Center on allegations of violating her parole on an unspecified offense, felony hit-and-run, felony eluding police in a car, eluding police on foot, driving under the influence of intoxicants, fourth-degree assault, reckless driving, reckless endangering and two counts of second-degree criminal mischief.

Erickson was treated for minor injuries and released from Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center.
