Nature photographer earns national award

For the fifth time, East County nature photographer Nancy J. Smith has received national recognition through the 2013 National and World Calendar Awards competition.

Smith, a Gresham resident, has been a professional photographer for 22 years and first entered the competition in 1996.

Her calendar, “The Majestic Pacific Northwest,” has been distributed through Powell’s Books, Craft Warehouse, New Seasons Market and other retailers.

Through the years, Smith has contributed to a variety of organizations, including the Nature Conservancy and 1000 Friends of Oregon. She also has raised funds through the sale of her calendars to send Gresham area students to outdoor school.

“I am a strong believer in people, and children in particular, getting outside to learn, to grow and to experience the outdoors,” Smith said.  “And I always encourage them to remember to relax, enjoy and appreciate the beauty of nature.”

For more information about Smith’s work, visit, or call 503-658-4408.
