Golf tourney benefits those in need

The third annual No One Left Behind Golf Tournament returns Saturday, July 20, to raise money to help serve the impoverished in East County.

The tournament takes place at the Gresham Golf Course, with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start best ball. To sign up for the event, visit mvcclive.com or call Bill Barlow at 503-334-7692 or 503-806-4415. The $80 per person fee includes range balls, cart, barbecue and prizes.

Those who wish also may support the event through sponsorships, or they can mail or drop off donations at Mountainview Christian Church, 1890 N.E. Cleveland Ave., Gresham 97030, telephone 503-492-1200 (attention NOLB Golf Tourney).

Nature photographer earns national award

For the fifth time, East County nature photographer Nancy J. Smith has received national recognition through the 2013 National and World Calendar Awards competition.

Smith, a Gresham resident, has been a professional photographer for 22 years and first entered the competition in 1996.

Her calendar, “The Majestic Pacific Northwest,” has been distributed through Powell’s Books, Craft Warehouse, New Seasons Market and other retailers.

Through the years, Smith has contributed to a variety of organizations, including the Nature Conservancy and 1000 Friends of Oregon. She also has raised funds through the sale of her calendars to send Gresham area students to outdoor school.

“I am a strong believer in people, and children in particular, getting outside to learn, to grow and to experience the outdoors,” Smith said.  “And I always encourage them to remember to relax, enjoy and appreciate the beauty of nature.”
