Gresham Police will be conducting a pedestrian safety operation from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, July 11, at East Powell Boulevard and Roberts Street. Officers will focus on raising the pedestrian safety awareness of drivers and pedestrians through education and enforcement of pedestrian right-of-way laws, said Lt. Claudio Grandjean, Gresham Police spokesman. Warning signs will be posted warning motorists approaching the area where officers are working.
Motorists must stop and yield to pedestrians who are waiting to cross or are crossing the roadway. Also, motorists are required to stop at all crosswalks when there is a vehicle already stopped in a lane adjacent to the lane they are traveling in.
A grant from the Oregon Walks Organization and the Oregon Department of Transportation is funding the safety effort. Additional missions will be scheduled during the summer and again in September as the new school year begins.
