Door reportedly opened suddenly, alcohol considered a factor

A Gresham man died after reportedly falling out of the passenger side door of a moving truck.

Ronald Loren Toby, 45, of Gresham died at the scene on Highway 20 just west of Newberg on at approximately 8:09 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, said Lt. Gregg Hastings, Oregon State Police spokesman.

Toby was a passenger in a Toyota Tundra pickup driving by his friend Phillip Lockwood, 42, of Newberg, as the truck traveled speeds of 55 mph westbound on Highway 240 just east of Northeast Ribbon Ridge Road near milepost 6, Hastings said.

The driver told police that suddenly the passenger door opened and Toby fell onto the roadway. He was declared deceased at the scene.

Preliminary information indicates alcohol may have been a contributing factor to the door opening. Also, Toby was not wearing a seatbelt.

The highway was closed for three hours while the Newberg Fire Department, Yamhill County Sheriff;s Office and Oregon State Police responded and investigated.
