The inaugural Bite of East County benefitting Zarephath Kitchen and Pantry was considered a success with more than 1,200 people in attendance.

Put on by the Fairview Business Association with local vendors and businesses participating, the goal of the event was “to create awareness of the great restaurants that are local to East County,” said Garth Everhart, a Bite organizer.

At the end of the festivities, Bumpers Bar and Grill was voted “Best of the Bite.”

The Bite raised more than $5,000 for Zarephath, a volunteer organization in Gresham that provides food for poor families and homeless people.

Zarephath board member Brian McCann said the money will provide the food kitchen with two months of meals for the people it serves Monday through Friday and on Sundays.

The money also will help the pantry’s goal to provide families with free meal boxes 12 months of the year instead of six, McCann said.
