Multnomah County libraries closed Oct. 3

All Multnomah County Library branches will close on Thursday, Oct. 3, for staff training. Staff also will take the opportunity to conduct building maintenance at the libraries on the same day.

Regular library hours will resume Friday, Oct. 4. Patrons with materials on hold or with due dates of Oct. 3 will have those holds or due dates automatically extended to Friday, Oct. 4.

Volunteer on a Troutdale committee

The city of Troutdale is looking for citizens to volunteer on committees.

The city is accepting applications from residents and Troutdale business owners interested in becoming involved and serving on a committee. Applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25.

Information about the committees is included in the application packet which you can pick up at Troutdale City Hall, 219 East Historic Columbia River Highway, and on the city’s website at www.troutdaleoregon.gov.

Lock your car doors

Car prowls continue to be a problem in Fairview, and the city’s police department is cautioning citizens to avoid leaving anything of value in cars.

Thieves are targeting laptops, iPods, cell phones, wallets and purses. Police are strongly recommending that motorists roll up their windows and lock their doors even if they’ll only be out of the car for a few minutes.

Win Duck, Beaver football tickets

The Oregon College Savings Plan is hosting its annual Civil War sweepstakes.

Ten Oregon State University and 10 University of Oregon fans will receive two tickets to a 2013 OSU or UO home football game, a pair of tickets to the Civil War game and a chance to win one of two $1,000 Oregon College Savings Plan accounts.

During football season, officials will hold 10 random drawings. Fans 18 and older may entry once by viewing the Oregon College Savings website and clicking on the Duck or Beaver logo.

Get informed about potential bond

Gresham-Barlow School District will hold two informational meetings on the school bond measure up for vote on Nov. 5.

The meetings will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, at Sam Barlow High School and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, at Gresham High School, providing the same information and meeting format.

Voters in the Gresham-Barlow School District will vote this fall on whether to approve a proposed school bond of $210 million intended to renovate schools, upgrade technology, improve security and add classroom space.

If approved, property tax rates for the school district’s bond debt would increase by $1.56 per $1,000 assessed value. Property taxes would increase by about $22 a month for a home with a median assessed value of $167,350. As the community grows, payments would be spread among new residents.

Help kids with reading

The Gresham-Barlow School District’s Oasis Volunteer Program is looking for parents, grandparents, neighbors and friends to work with children who are struggling to learn to read.

Oasis volunteers spend one hour a week during the school day working one-on-one with a child in grades first through fifth to build reading and language skills, self-esteem and positive attitudes toward learning.

Oasis provides training, materials and ongoing support. The training will take place in two three-hour sessions for a total of six hours: 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Sept. 25 and 9 a.m. to noon Friday, Sept. 27.

Tutors are encouraged to attend a monthly support meeting to share experiences with other tutors and receive additional training and materials.
