The woman who died after being hit by a car on Highway 26 Saturday night has been identified as Rosie A. Martinez, 73, of Gresham, according to the state medical examiner’s office.

Martinez was crossing the 700 block of Highway 26 going from west to east at about 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, when she was hit by a southeast bound Lexus, said Lt. Claudio Grandjean, Gresham Police spokesman.

The woman was not in a marked crosswalk and the area is poorly lit.

“At night, once it’s dark, it is very difficult to see people,” Grandjean said.

Residents often cross the highway in the same spot because the nearest crosswalks are quite some distance away at Powell Boulevard to the north and Palmquist to the south, he added. It is especially dangerous because motorists are transitioning from a 45 mph zone to highway speeds of 55 mph.

The driver, Carmen Flores, stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, who closed traffic in both directions to investigate. No citations will be issued, Grandjean said.
