A 17-year-old boy is accused of using a machete to rob a man of his headphones in outer Southeast Portland early Wednesday, Sept. 18.

Officers from Portland's East Precinct responded to the 1:50 a.m. report of a robbery at Southeast 159th Avenue and Main Street, where the victim – a 21-year-old man – told police that a black Ford Expedition pulled up along side him.

The suspect got out of the car armed with a machete and demanded the victim's headphones, which the victim handed over. Then the suspect got back into the car and left.

As the victim called 911, the vehicle returned, but this time a different man got out. He gave the victim back his headphones and apologized before the car left again.

A short time later, police spotted the vehicle and pulled it over. Inside were six people, including the suspect identified as Javier Coyt. Police arrested him and recovered the machete.

Coyt now faces allegations of first-degree robbery and is lodged at the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Center.
