Local girl dies in rollover crash

The 11-year-old girl who died in a rollover crash on a freeway onramp Sunday, Sept. 22, has been identified as a Gresham resident.

Yoselyn Escobar-Vargas, who lived in the Rockwood neighborhood, died at the scene of the crash at 4:05 p.m. on the ramp to westbound Interstate 84 from Northeast 181st Avenue, said Officer Adam Baker, a Gresham Police spokesman.

She was one of four children and five adults in a large van that rolled over and off the ramp.

Yoselyn was a sixth-grader at H.B. Lee Middle School, and her younger brother is a second-grader at Wilkes Elementary School.

Counselors were available Monday and Tuesday at the schools and will continue to be available as needed, said Andrea Watson, Reynolds School District spokeswoman.

The driver and other passengers were taken to area hospitals with varying degrees of injuries. As of Sunday night, some had been released from the hospital, while others remained hospitalized. The girl's mother and a sibling also were in the vehicle when it crashed.

Based on the investigation, police suspect the driver was entering the freeway from Northeast 181st Avenue heading west onto the freeway. As the van neared the top of the ramp, the van lost traction on the wet roads, causing the back of the van to fishtail. The driver was unable to control the van, and it rolled north off of the ramp. During the crash, the girl was ejected from the van, resulting in fatal injuries.

The multi-agency Vehicular Crimes Team is investigating. It is examining the van for mechanical issues and trying to determine whether all the passengers were wearing seat belts and if the seatbelts were in good condition.

Anyone who witnessed the accident or helped the passengers after the crash are asked to contact the Gresham Police Department.
