Clackamas County Animal Adoption & Education Center in partnership with Clackamas Dogs Foundation is hosting two workshops dedicated to dog behavior at the Clackamas Community Center, 15711 S.E. 90th Ave.

The two-day workshop, “Understanding Dogs and Their Needs: A Weekend with Animal Behaviorist Kelley Bollen,” is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, and Sunday, Oct. 27. Topics include understanding aggression in dogs, assessing behavior, reading canine body language, safe handling, recognizing and reducing stress, enrichment and training programs, and behavior modification in the shelter. Registration is $225.

The one-day workshop “Down & Dirty: Hands on Shelter Dog Assessment & Behavior Modification in the Shelter” is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 28. Bollen specializes in fostering behavioral wellness in shelter animals through stress reduction, enrichment, training and behavior modification programs. Her work also involves teaching shelter staff to properly perform canine behavior evaluations to identify the dog’s behavioral needs in order to make better matches and improve adoption success. Cost is $35.

Bollen, owner and director of Animal Alliances, has a master’s degree in animal behavior and is a certified animal behavior consultant. The former director of behavior programs for the shelter medicine program at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, Bollen is based in Massachusetts and provides training and support across the nation.

Her goal as a companion animal behavior consultant is to improve the human-animal bond by increasing her client’s understanding of animal behavior and behavior modification. “This is a great opportunity for dog owners and people who work in the animal field to get top-quality training and network with others in the field,” said Maura White, the foundation’s development officer.

The training is approved for continuing education credits for veterinarians, vet techs and certified professional dog trainers. Space is still available in both workshops.

An optional dinner with Bollen is also available. The Hampton Inn Portland/Clackamas, located within walking distance of the workshops, is offering a 15 percent discount to all attendees.
