Adventist Health to open Gresham Surgery Center

Healthcare provider to offer day-surgery procedures at facility in Gresham Station

Most people dread the ride home from the hospital following an outpatient procedure as much as the procedure itself.

Adventist Health intends to change that by bringing day-surgery services closer to home, when the Gresham Surgery Center opens Friday, Nov. 1, in Gresham Station. by: OUTLOOK PHOTO: JIM CLARK - Dr. Howard Gratten, right, talks with Mary Hall, R.N., in one of two surgery units at Adventist's Gresham Surgery Center in Gresham Station.

“It comes down to providing high-quality care and the most convenient access to the communities we serve,” said David Russell, vice president of business development for Adventist Health. “The new surgery center expands the outpatient services we can offer to the local community.”

The new facility will offer ambulatory services in orthopedic, gastroenterology, obstetrics and gynecology, podiatry and pain management procedures. It features two fully-equipped surgical suites and one diagnostic unit for gastroenterology patients.

The center is the first of its kind within the Adventist Health system, Russell said, and an effort by the healthcare provider to make outpatient services more accessible. Along with the other major players in the health care industry, Adventist is anticipating an increase in the need for services as more people become insured under the Affordable Care Act.

Adventist Health planted roots in the local community after opening a medical clinic on Northwest Council Drive in Gresham Station in January 2005. The clinic provides care for patients in internal and family medicine, physical therapy, radiology and outpatient laboratory services. The new surgery center, Russell said, will occupy the top level of the building, which was once home to Rose City Breast Care and already contained two surgery suites.

“It just happened that the space was already built out by another group,” he said. “That presented an opportunity for us to take advantage of that space and be able to expand.”

Initially, Russell said, outpatient procedures will be scheduled at the center on Thursdays and Fridays. Adventist plans to add two additional surgical suites and another gastroenterology diagnostic unit to meet community needs.

“We believe we can accommodate the number of procedures we are expecting at this point (two days a week),” he said. “But we anticipate that as the center expands, we will be open Monday through Friday.”
