Corbett woman jumps from bridge into Sandy River after police chase

Woman suffers minor injuries, cited by police

Rebecca HumphriesPolice do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor when a 26-year-old Corbett woman jumped from the Stark Street Bridge and into the Sandy River last week.

At approximately 4:40 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, police pulled over Rebecca Humphries in Troutdale for failing to yield to a person in a crosswalk, said Sgt. Carey Kaer, Troutdale Police spokesman.

As police were trying to stop the car near Southeast 242nd Drive and Stark Street, officers ran the plates and learned the green Ford Taurus that Humphries was driving was stolen.

But instead of pulling over, the woman sped off, heading east on Stark Street, Kaer said.

Two police cars pursued as the woman drove toward the Stark Street Bridge, Kaer said.

A video camera recording the chase from the dashboard of the first patrol car shows what happens next.

Humphries gets out of her still-moving car, in the rain, runs to the edge of the bridge and climbs over the railing.

She jumps without hesitation into the freezing Sandy River below.

Realizing how cold the water was, Kaer said the woman swam to the river banks where she was met by police officers.

“She was fine. I’m sure she was cold,” Kaer said.

Humphries complained of minor injuries and was taken to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, Kaer said.

Humphries was cited for use of a stolen vehicle, reckless driving, eluding an officer in a vehicle, eluding an officer on foot and failing to yield to a pedestrian in a sidewalk.

Kaer was unable to say where the car was stolen from.
