Falling boulder damages Multnomah Falls bridge

Forest Service closes Benson Bridge at Multnomah Falls

by: CONTRIBUTED PHOTO: U.S. FOREST SERVICE - Benson Bridge at Multnomah Falls was shut down after a boulder hit the bridge and damaged the decking and part of the railing. The Benson Bridge at Multnomah Falls was shut down Thursday, Jan. 9, after a boulder smashed through its deck and damaged the handrail, said U.S. Forest Service spokesman Stan Hinatsu.

The footbridge, which can be seen from Interstate 84, traverses the iconic Multnomah Falls in the Columbia River Gorge.

Hinatsu said it looks like the rock fell on the western half of the bridge and took out part of the deck on the north side.

A trail leading from Multnomah Fall Lodge up to the bridge — Larch Mountain trail No. 441 — also has been closed.

The Forest Service did not confirm when the bridge may be reopened.
