Troutdale moves toward volunteer-driven events

Claude Cruz, president of the West Columbia Gorge Chamber of Commerce, has scheduled a meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, in the chamber’s conference room at 107 E. Historic Columbia River Highway to discuss organizing this year’s July SummerFest.

In the past, the Troutdale-based chamber has been responsible for putting on Troutdale’s community events, such as SummerFest and the annual Christmas Tree Lighting.

However, due to limited staff time on behalf of the chamber, Cruz said the city and chamber have decided to move toward more volunteer-driven community events.

“We want to have good community events,” Cruz said. “They are really important to the town, but we have to do it in a way that’s realizable.”

Cruz said the West Columbia Gorge Chamber of Commerce will remain in charge of the events, with leadership and management still provided by the chamber, but will look to community volunteers for help running the events.

The Jan. 22 meeting, open to all interested parties, will focus on creating a citizen-driven planning team and establishing needed committees. Cruz encourages anyone interested in helping make Troutdale community events better to join.
