Fires must be tended at all times

Gresham Interim Fire Chief Greg Matthews announced this week that people can start burning yard debris in their backyards.

The spring backyard burning season for the cities of Gresham, Fairview and Wood Village began April 16 and will fall on Wednesdays and Saturdays for the next 10 successive burn days, said a department spokeswoman.

Burn days are subject to approval by the Department of Environmental Quality on a daily basis. But residents must call each day before burning. To reach the Burn Line, call 503-618-3083.

“Residents must call the Gresham Fire and Emergency Service Burn Information Line each day to determine if it is an approved burn day in their city and what hours they can burn,” the city announced in a press release.

The rules for backyard burning include:

• Designated hours are set daily by DEQ and are subject to change.

• Only yard debris is suitable for burning.

• Burning garbage, tires, treated wood or building materials is not allowed.

• Fires must be tended at all times.

• A charged water hose or other firefighting water supply must be available while burning.

• Piles must be no larger than six feet in diameter by three feet high.

• Piles must not be within 25 feet of a structure or any combustible material.

• Burning is only allowed on residential properties on designated burn days.

The Gresham Fire Department has two burn seasons per year, in spring and fall. Visit for more information.
