Gresham police launch photo ID web page

Public can help identify suspects, victims, witnesses

Gresham police are harnessing the power of the Internet to help them solve crimes through development of a “Can You ID Me” web page.

“With the prevalence of video surveillance, we often have images of persons we cannot identify,” said Lt. Claudio Grandjean, Gresham police spokesman.

By putting the photos on the Gresham police website, Grandjean hopes the public will help identify some of the people in the photos, who could be suspects, victims or possible witnesses who might help solve crimes.

With one click on the picture, a form appears that people can fill out with information they have on the person in the photo. The information will then be forwarded to the officer or detective working on the case, Grandjean said, and forms can be submitted anonymously.

Police will not arrest people based solely on anonymous identifications, according to Sgt. Manny Hernandez, investigations section supervisor.

“We still need to do investigative work to corroborate the information we’re receiving,” he said. “This is just a way for us to narrow the focus of an investigation.”

The “Can You ID Me” web page can be reached directly at http://1.usa.gov/1pyUL5P.

The page has two pictures on it at present, but more will be added soon, Grandjean said.

“We’ve just started and are getting it out to our officers. Part of our challenge is to make sure officers remember that they have a tool.”

The web page also has links to other law enforcement photo ID websites, including the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Salem Police Department, Vancouver Police Department and Washington state.

Officers often share with each other photos of people they would like to identify, but putting the pictures on the web page for the public to see will greatly expand chances for identification.

“Officers will get pictures from surveillance videos and put them on roll call, but it’s a small pool and now we can put it on the worldwide web,” Grandjean said.
