Drivers identified in three-car crash on Interstate 84

by: CONTRIBUTED PHOTO - A 71-year-old Washington woman was trapped in her car after it rolled and landed on its side on Interstate 84.Corbett fire personnel had to cut open the roof of a Honda CRV Thursday afternoon to extract the driver who was trapped inside following a three-vehicle crash on westbound Interstate 84 just east of Rooster Rock.

The woman was taken by Life Flight to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center with serious injuries, said Steve Alexander, spokesman for the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office.

She has been identified as Carol Larson, 71, of Clayton, Wash.

A hospital spokewoman said Friday that Larson is now in good condition.

Others involved in the crash, a driver of a Chevy Blazer, Donald Niedert, 52, of Carson, Wash., and three young passengers in his car were not injured. The driver of a tractor-trailer, Donald Hilerbrand, 56, of Wasco, was also uninjured.

Sheriff's deputies responded to the crash around 1 p.m. Thursday, June 5.

An early investigation said the driver of the Blazer had stopped on the freeway after the car's tire blew out, and the vehicle was partially blocking the left lane of traffic.

As the tractor-tailer passed the stopped car, the Honda rear ended the right corner of the Blazer.

The Honda rolled over and onto its side, hitting the left rear of the tractor-trailer.

One westbound lane was closed while the East County Major Crash team investigated the accident. It was reopened around 3:50 p.m.
