Gresham cops break up burglary ring

A major burglary ring was broken up by Gresham police this week after a six-month investigation that including solving a dozen open cases and recovering more than $25,000 in stolen property.

Detectives said they noticed that appliances had been stolen from several vacant or for sale houses in Gresham.

They got a break when a neighbor in the 1300 block of Northeast Country Club Drive saw a burglary in process last month and thought at first the burglars might be movers.

The burglars apparently backed a truck up to a garage, broke in and loaded the applicances in the back of the truck, then covered them with a tarp and drove off. Police quickly arrested Christopher Jacobo, 20, on June 6 in connection with the burglary and then linked him to John Copeland, 33. Copeland was arrested June 13.

In mid-January, authorities had already used a search warrant for a home in the 2900 block of Northeast 13th Street and recovered several items stolen by the burglary ring.

Also arrested in connection with the burglary ring were Mark Booker, 48. Other suspects arrested were Bonnie Lyn Mata, 29; Richard Allen Lepore, no age given; Joseph Schwab, 50; and Steven Davila, no age given.
