Bates concedes Clackamas race

Recount gave Bates only one more vote

After a sample recount of the Clackamas County Commissioner position 5 race gave him only one more vote, challenger Steve Bates has finally conceded.

by: CONTRIBUTED - Steve BatesBates wrote in a letter to his supporters he was certain that “some anomalies could change the tide of the vote count” since he had carried 60 precincts out of 118 and the winner, incumbent Jim Bernard, won only 53 precincts with five precincts tied.

Bates said Clackamas County Clerk Sherry Hall did a good job with the recount and he planned to attend the next Clackamas County Commissioner meeting to officially concede and congratulate Bernard.

Bates lost the election to Bernard by 762 votes with a difference of 1.3 percent according to the Clackamas County elections website. In the close race, Bates received 28,318 votes to 29,080 for Bernard.
