People and pets advised not to swim in the lake

Fairview Lake is closed for swimming due to potential bacteria in the lake.

The city of Fairview issued a public alert Thursday morning, July 10, that a presence of cyanobacteria or blue green algae is large enough to warrant laboratory testing for toxins.

Lake users should be wary around bright green floating mats of algae.

Children and pets should stay out of the water until further notice, and adults should refrain from swimming to avoid eye irritation or intestinal illness.

Boating and fishing are safe at this point, health officials said.

The algae is early in its life cycle, and officials are testing the water to determine the extent of bacteria in the lake.

If test results reveal toxins in the water, additional restrictions on the lake may apply.

Fairview will post further updates on the city's website at
