Four die in crash near Dodge Park
Three people die before arrival of first responders, fourth passenger dies at hospital
Four people died in a fiery single-vehicle crash ealy Monday morning near Dodge Park along the Sandy River.
The driver has been identified as Brandon Lee Mayo, 31, of Portland. The three passengers have been identified as Shalene Rene Newland, 20, Jesse Jasso-Varsamas, 20, and Suzanne Marie Varsamas, 39, all also of Portland.
Just before 2:30 a.m., neighboring residents heard a big bang near Southeast Lusted Road and Hudson Road. One of the neighbors, Duane Mickelson, said he initially thought a power line had fallen down, causing him to step outside only to find a flaming car smashed into a tree.
Acting swiftly, Mickelson noticed multiple people were still in the vehicle and, while dialing 9-1-1, he pulled one of the victims from the wreckage before the car became fully engulfed.
According to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, Mickelson quickly helped one of the passengers in the back seat out of the vehicle before the vehicle and the remaining occupants were engulfed in flames. The occupants of the vehicle died before the arrival of first responders.
The injured passenger was flown to a Portland area hospital by LifeFlight. The passenger died later as a result of injuries.
Mickelson said two dogs were also in the car and managed to escape the fire. One of the dogs was found alive within the next several hours.
The dog was transported to a local veterinary hospital. A reading of the dog's microchip provided information about its registered owner.
As of now, the dog is still alive and being treated for it's injuries.
Todd Jones, another neighbor, said crashes in the dimly lit stretch have happened before.
The intersection of Lusted Road and Hudson Road reopened around 7:30 a.m. Monday.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
