Hoax Alert: Johnny Depp did not visit Gresham
A deceiving article making the rounds on social media claims world-famous actor Johnny Depp made an unexpected pit stop in Gresham after his car broke down.
"I'm telling you, these people in Gresham are the real deal. If I ever retire, I'm moving there," Depp appears to gush in an undated article titled "Johnny Depp Had This to Say About the Residents of Gresham, Oregon."
But a closer look at the seemingly-authentic news site — KBR 31 — reveals that the article is intended as satire. On a page of the site labeled "disclaimer," the website states that none of its content "should be considered true."
KBR 31 did not respond to a request for comment.
It's easy to be fooled by so-called 'fake news,' but social media experts offer these tips.
• Consider the source. Have you ever heard of this website before? Can you find an address, telephone number or other contact information. If not, that's a bad sign.
• Explore the site. Do other articles contain a mishmash of improbable claims? Graphic or disreputable advertisements are another indicator of an untrustworthy provider.
• If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
