A man was killed Friday afternoon and a woman taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation from a fire at the Rosewood Commons apartment complex in Gresham.
Multiple 911 calls were made at 2:17 p.m. reporting the blaze at Rosewood Commons, 1071 S.E. Paropa Ave., Gresham Fire Engine 72 responded three minutes later to find flames jumping out the second-floor windows and the back of the apartment.
A woman rescued several puppies from the fire by dropping them out of a window, before jumping to safety herself, firefighters said. She was transported to a local hospital with smoke inhalation damage, but not before informing firefighters of another person still trapped in the apartment.
"It took about 10 minutes for us to knock down the flames and locate the individual," said Todd Keathley, division chief of emergency operations.
The man, whose name has not been released, was found dead in the apartment. No firefighters were hurt during the incident, which Keathley said is always a concern during an incident of this nature.
Numerous Gresham Fire and Police units responded to the blaze just before 3 p.m. Friday, blocking Kane Drive and causing large traffic disruptions.
Investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, but initial reports indicate that foul play or arson is not suspected.
