District, teachers shine in state spotlight

OUTLOOK EDITORIAL

Congratulations go out to Michael Lindblad, who has been named State Social Studies Teacher of the Year by the Oregon Council for the Social Studies. Lindblad is a social studies teacher at Gresham High School.

Everyone should have the opportunity to be taught by Lindblad, who carefully combines lessons with civic involvement. By the time students leave his classroom, they've done more than just memorize facts; they've put the world around them into better perspective because they've helped make the world a better place.

Lindblad follows on the heels of Andrew Pate, a Barlow High School teacher who was Oregon's 2012 Social Studies Teacher of the Year.

While we're on the topic, we'll also take this opportunity to congratulate the Gresham-Barlow School District for its placement among the top districts in the state for encouraging student participation in AP (or advanced placement) classes.

The district's appearance on the Advanced Placement Honor Roll, along with the back-to-back awards given to these social studies teachers, is testament to the district's efforts to challenge students to stretch their limits, and to adequately prepare students for college and life after high school.
