Preserve GHS facade for future generations
I was very pleased to see Mayor Shane Bemis's op/ed regarding the draft design for Gresham High School ("District must protect historic GHS facade," Page A6, May 9.)
As a member of the Gresham City Council and one of two council liaisons to the Gresham Design Commission, I listen to the architects presentation. No where in the presentation did he acknowledge the importance of this historic facade and building. Other than to say they would try and incorporate the four terracotta panels on the proposed Main Street lesser entry.
I have seen wonderful facades of classic buildings saved. Gresham High School's can be too.
My two daughters graduated from Gresham High. When I showed them this proposal they were appalled.
It would be a travesty to lose this iconic front facade on Main Street. For decades it's been the main entry, not Division Street as proposed. Let's keep it that way.
I agree with the mayor, when he says we have lost many historic building. What historic facades/buildings we destroy today can never be replaced. Let's not loose another one.
