Upcoming planetarium show to highlight recent eclipse

Mt. Hood Community College Planetarium Director Pat Hanrahan photographed the May 27 solar eclipse from a high desert campground in northern California and summed up the experience with a decidedly unscientific phrase.

'Oh, it was a kick in the pants to see!'

Hanrahan plans to share his photos at the Monday, June 4, show 'Summer Sky Highlights and the Transit of Venus,' in the Sky Theater, located near the library on the Gresham campus, 26000 S.E. Stark St. Shows take place at 7 and 8:15 p.m.

Hanrahan also will address the upcoming transit of Venus across the face of the sun, which will take place Tuesday, June 5. You need a special telescope to view it without hurting your eyes, he adds, noting OMSI, 1945 S.E. Water Ave., Portland, is hosting a free viewing from 3-9 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, in the east parking area.

Hanrahan notes the transit of Venus won't be repeated until 2117, and Venus will pass directly in front of the sun, appearing as a small, slowly moving black dot. For Portland, the greatest transit will occur at 6:29 p.m.

Filtered solar telescopes and special viewing glasses will be available for safely viewing the sun at OMSI.

Summertime also provides many other celestial opportunities for sky-viewers, he adds, and he will show visitors how to locate the planets as well as well as how to locate prominent constellations, star clusters, galaxies and nebulae.

Visitors are encouraged to ask questions during each 45-minute program. Campus parking is free during the show, and no permit is required.

Children are welcome to attend. The planetarium is wheelchair accessible. Admission for the general public is $2 and free for Mt. Hood students. (Student identification required.). For more information, call 503-491-7297.
