Troutdale SummerFest to take place Saturday, July 21

Event features music, vendors, horse that does tricks


by: FILE PHOTO - Squishy walks in the 2011 SummerFest parade.The 40th annual Troutdale SummerFest takes place from 9:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 21, and features live entertainment, children’s activities and a hula hoop contest.

Here’s a schedule of what’s happening:

9:45 a.m.: “Chalk It Up” on the Historic Columbia River Highway in Troutdale. Children are invited to draw their favorite chalk art on the sidewalks and streets. Chalk will be provided.

10 a.m.: The Beat Goes On Marching Band performs a concert in Mayor’s Square.

10:30 a.m.: LoveBomb Go-Go Marching Band concert.

11 a.m.: The SummerFest parade will wind its way through Historic Troutdale ending at Glenn Otto Community Park, 1102 E. Historic Columbia River Highway.

Michael Orelove of Gresham is grand marshal of the SummerFest parade. Orelove has worked with the Kiwanis on community service projects at Troutdale Elementary School.

12:30 p.m.: The West Columbia Chamber of Commerce will welcome everyone and make presentations, naming Donna Erwin, owner of Columbia River Gallery in Troutdale, as Citizen of the Year and Maddy (Madeleine) Trattles of Reynolds High School as Youth of the Year.

The Troutdale Lions Club will honor its Sam Cox Humanitarian of the Year, Leslie Daoust, who served as the general coordinator and fundraiser for Imagination Station, a playground located across from Reynolds High School, in 1994.

Noon to 2 p.m.: Pedro and his world-class horse performs tricks; music from Conchords Chorale, Marimba Ensemble and Worn Out Shoes, a string music quartet; Martial Arts Fitness Center will put on a demonstration.

2:30 p.m.: Buttons the Clown will host a hula hoop contest.

3 p.m.: Cake marking the 40th anniversary will be served. SALT Academy and Performing Arts Company as well as the How Long Jug Band will perform.

4:30 p.m. Northwest Steelheaders’ Ducky Derby off the Troutdale bridge. Cost is $5 per duck, and the ducks will race about a quarter of a mile on the Sandy River.

In addition to these events, in the Kids Zone this year, Home Depot will sponsor a free “build it” venue, and the Troutdale Recreation Department provides craft projects.

Exotic animal refuge A Walk on the Wildside will provide hands-on opportunities with animals.

For adults there will be a beer garden sponsored by C and J Event Group, and for the families a food court as well as vendors throughout the park.
