Water polo fundraiser set to grant last wish for ALS-stricken man

A Damascus man is organizing a water polo tournament and social to make an old teammate’s dying wish come true.

Carl Tuma of Damascus played on the same water polo team as Dan Berry, 45, of Hillsboro when they went to David Douglas High School together. The team nabbed the state boys water polo championship in 1982, 1983 and 1984.

After graduating, Berry joined the Navy, served in Afghanistan and is now battling ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease — a debilitating disease that robs people of their ability to move, talk and eventually breathe.

In order for Berry to visit with his old teammates and friends one last time before he can no longer speak, Tuma is pooling his resources to coordinate a two-day water polo tournament Friday, Oct. 12, and Saturday, Oct. 13, complete with a social and action that Friday evening.

Boys teams from David Douglas, Sam Barlow, Reynolds, Hillsboro, South Salem and West Salem high schools will compete in the tournament.

USA Water Pool is donating items for the auction and social on Friday Oct. 12, at American Legion Post No. 1, 1820 S.E. 122nd Ave. A no-host bar opens at 3:30 p.m. with a buffet dinner at 6 p.m.

A $10 donation at the door is requested, and all proceeds benefit The ALS Association of Oregon. T-shirts also will be on sale for $25 at the social. All proceeds benefit the organization. Shirts also can be purchased through the Team Dan Berry Facebook page.
