Eileen Judith Houser

Damascus resident Eileen Judith Houser died Thursday, June 27, from cancer. She was 68.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 20, at Creator Lutheran Church in Clackamas.

Eileen was born Dec. 12, 1944, in Chicago to Palmer and Harriet Johnson. She attended high school in Canoga Park, Calif.

On Aug. 18, 1965, Eileen married Ronald Houser at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Canoga Park.

Eileen earned her bachelor’s degree in social studies education from UCLA and her master’s degree in social studies education from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ill.

Later, after raising her two sons, Eileen received her master’s degree in special education from Portland State University.

Eileen worked as a special education teacher, retiring in 2007. She enjoyed gardening, arts and crafts, traveling, playing cards with friends and reading.

Eileen was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Nancy Bowers. She is survived by her husband, Ronald Houser; sons, Paul and Ryan Houser; daughters-in-law, Jennifer and Barbara Houser; and six grandchildren.

Jack R. French

Oct. 25 1934-July 3, 2013

East County resident Jack R. French died Wednesday, July 3, at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.

A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham, followed by cookies and beverages.

Jack was employed primarily at Ace Electric of Portland before becoming part owner of Phoenix Electric in Tualatin. He retired in 1990.

During his Navy and electrical career, Jack made many friends. As a volunteer, he helped three churches remodel or build their buildings.

Jack and his wife, Barbara, then traveled to Crooked River Ranch in Yuma, Ariz., during the winters.

Jack is survived by Barbara, his wife of more than 57 years; four children, Rick, Ed, Michael and Karyn French; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Deborah McBryde

March 13, 1961-June 23, 2013

Former Gresham resident Deborah McBryde died Sunday, June 23. She was 52.

A celebration of Deborah’s life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Rockwood Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1910 S.E. 182nd Ave.

Deborah was born March 13, 1961, in Spokane, Wash. She lived in the Portland area for 46 years, working for Aetna, Blue Cross and Custard Insurance as an office manager.

Deborah was a proud member of the Patriot Guard Riders and attended many “flag lines.” She attended Grace Community Church in Gresham.

Survivors include her three children, Austin, LaRae and Cole Miller; her father, Allen Engen; her mother, Janice Lampros; two sisters, Jennifer Brodigan and Kathryn Hulett; her grandmother, Violet Engen; and her friend, Tom Cain.

Joan Dee Caldwell

Troutdale resident Joan Dee Caldwell died Wednesday, July 3, in Gresham. She was 77.

A celebration of Joan’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 11, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham, with interment at Douglass Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 10.

Joan was born Oct. 27, 1935, in New York City to Albert and Louise (Richards) Keller. She moved with her family to Albuquerque, N.M., and graduated from Hyland High School.

On Aug. 7, 1953, she married Harry R. Caldwell. They were later divorced but remained close friends.

In 1980, Joan moved to Oregon. She was a country-gospel songwriter and poet.

Outside of writing, Joan enjoyed making jewelry, cooking, sewing and decorating.

Joan is survived by her children, Christopher Caldwell, Teresa Stroud, Brent Caldwell and Dawn Valencia; sisters, Margaret Robran, Gail Keller and Diana Miller; brother, David Keller; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Maria Josephine Mallon Gregg

Gresham resident Maria Josephine Mallon Gregg died Thursday, July 4. She was 86.

A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, at Gresham Memorial Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, at St. Henry Catholic Church.

Maria was born Nov. 13, 1926, in Havana. She graduated from Holy Child Academy in Portland.

She spent most of her life in Portland, raising 12 children with her husband, Harold Gregg. Her family lovingly called her “queen of the family.”

Her husband and two daughters, Molly Gregg and Maria Parrish, preceded Maria in death.

Maria is survived by her children, Christine Macias, Patrick Gregg, Kevin Gregg, Christopher Gregg, Susan Hostetler, Gerald Gregg, Elizabeth Heacock, Rebecca Heacock, David Gregg and Matthew Gregg; 35 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Gresham Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations in Maria’s name may be made to the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging (a Catholic nonprofit organization).

Brandon Miles Dean

East County resident Brandon Miles Dean died Thursday, July 4, in Troutdale. He was 33.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 10, at Gresham Memorial Chapel, 257 S.E. Roberts Ave.

Brandon was born Nov. 25, 1979, in Portland.

Melba Lilly Briece

Melba, a longtime resident of Fairview, died July 4, 2013 in Clackamas, OR.

A private family service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery.

Melba had a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Throughout it all she was sweet and loving, concerned for everyone else, always giving her radiant smile.

She was preceded in death by her husband John A. Briece, who died Aug. 19, 2011 and her son Rod F. Briece, who died Jan. 8, 2012.

Survivors include four children: Janet Evans of Sandy, Judy Keller of Fairview, Patty Doran of Ohio, and John Briece of Gresham, 10 grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

The family requests all remembrances be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Scott S. Morency

June 21, 1969 - June 30, 2013

Scott S. Morency

Scot Morency was born June 21, 1969 in Lawrence, Mass to Steve and Holly (Gleason) Morency. He attended Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach, CA and Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, CA. He was an incredible athlete, playing football and running track as a state finalist in high school. He was a talented musician and played in many bands. He also loved surfing and skateboarding.

On August 6, 2004, Scot married his wife Kelly in Portland, OR. In his spare time he loved spending time with his family and friends, playing golf, making music, and attending Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Portland, OR, where he was a member.

Scot is survived by his wife Kelly Morency, son Andrew Morency, father Steve Morency, mother Holly Gleason, sister Ami Morency, and nephew Jesse Morency. A service will be held for Scot on Saturday, July 13th at 11 AM at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 11560 SE Market St, Portland, OR 97216. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Scot’s name to the athletics department of Centennial High School at 18135 SE Brooklyn, Portland, OR 97236.
