Dennis “Bud” Budke

July 28, 1935-July 29, 2013

Gresham resident Dennis “Bud” Budke died Monday, July 29. He was 78.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, at Willamette National Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. at Good Shepherd Community Church, 29866 S.E. Haley Road, Boring.

Bud was born July 28, 1935, in North Dakota to Joseph and Catherine (Haskins) Budke. He joined the Air Force after graduating and was honorably discharged in 1958. He then went into the Oregon Air National Guard until his retirement. He volunteered at the Classic Air Museum in Hillsboro until his health declined.

Bud is survived by his wife, Sharon Budke; sons, Mark and Steven Budke (and Steven’s wife, Mary); four grandchildren; and a special family friend, Lind Ouja.

Bateman Carroll Funeral Home is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Frank Newell

July 25, 1931-Aug. 7, 2013

Former Gresham resident Frank Newell died Wednesday, Aug. 7, in Roseburg. He was 82.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home.

Frank was born July 25, 1931, in Hood River to Frank and Virginia Newell. He graduated from Gresham High School in 1949 and worked in real estate development, retiring in 2000.

Frank married Gloria Ostrom on Sept. 25, 1954, in Gresham.

He is survived by his wife; daughter, Jayne Lanza; son, Clint Newell; daughter-in-law, Carol Newell; and granddaughter, Missoni Lanza.

Elizabeth L. Kipers

Elizabeth “Betty” was the first born of Don and Esther Hays of El Dorado, Kansas. She married her high school sweetheart Paul J. Kipers, January 1, 1939. They moved to Portland, OR in the summer of 1939. Their son, Paul J. Kipers, Jr. was born February 21, 1940.

During World War II she had their second child, JoAnne Marie. Early in the 1950’s, a life changing day came, when she decided along with Paul to go to Life Bible College in southern California to become ministers.

Betty graduated with Bachelor of Theology degree in 1958. Betty she helped build the Foursquare Church in Granada Hills, CA. In 1963, she had their third child, Timothy E. Kipers. In 1964, they moved back to Oregon. They established a retail RV business in Portland.

Betty lived in her home until the age of 87 years old. Three years ago, she moved to Farmington Square in Gresham, where she was gently cared for by her special caregivers whom she grew to consider her friends.

Betty was a wonderful home maker, business partner and wife. She was involved in women’s ministries, widows groups and bible studies whenever she was needed. Her ministering was special as her education, wisdom and life’s experiences truly helped all who knew her. Elizabeth’s love of God was seen throughout her life.

She was proceeded in death by her husband Paul J. Kipers, Sr., on May 25, 2001. She was survived by son Paul J. Kipers, Jr. of Gresham, OR, daughter Jo Anne M. Smith of Grants Pass, OR and son Timothy E. Kipers of Troutdale, OR.

Betty’s family would like to invite her family and friends to Betty’s memorial and celebration of life at Gresham Memorial Chapel, 257 SE Roberts, Gresham, OR, on Friday, August 16, 2013 at 3 pm.

James Clyde (Jim) Ross

July 3, 1922 - August 4, 2013


James Clyde (Jim) Ross

Jim was born on July 3rd, 1922 in Bessemer, Michigan to Daniel Webster and Iva B. (Hoffman) Ross. They moved to Portland in 1924 where he and his brother Jack (deceased) grew up and attended Kennedy Grade School and Jefferson High School.

Jim enlisted in the Navy on March 22nd, 1942. While training and teaching Naval classes at Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa, he met Besse Elizabeth Hayes. Jim volunteered for a patrol torpedo assignment and served with MOMMI rank in Squadron #33 on PT 492 for 20 months in the South Pacific theater of WWII. Upon his return home, he married his beloved Besse on September 30,1945. They spent 62 wonderful years together prior to her death.

In 1953, Jim and Besse moved to a small acreage east of Gresham where they raised their four children: Don (deceased), Jean, Janet, and Sandy. Jim loved his family dearly, as family meant more to him than anything else.

Jim was a plasterer for his entire working career. He was a proud member and supporter of Portland’s Plasterers’ Union Local # 82. Many individuals associated with it became true working partners and his dear life-long friends.

After retirement, Jim and Besse enjoyed many winters together relaxing with family and friends in Arizona. These were truly wonderful years, and Jim treasured these memories during his last years without Besse.

Jim will be greatly missed by his friends and family: Daughters: Jean (Larry) Watson, Jan (Mark) Bortnem, and Sandy (Jerry) Kucharczyk. Grandchildren: Rachael (Patrick) Patoray, Andrea (Toby) Oft, Nathan (Addie) Bortnem, Grant Bortnem, Chris (Steph) Watson, and Luke Bortnem. Great Grandchildren: Jamey, Colin, Luci, Jackson, and Colby.

Many thanks to everyone at the Gresham Manor who befriended him and blessed his final years alone. This meant a great deal to his family.

At Jim’s request, there will be no services. He will be intermed beside Besse at Willamette National Cemetery.
