George Lewis Klinger

Oct. 24, 1937-Aug. 15, 2013

Troutdale resident George Lewis Klinger died Thursday, Aug. 15. He was 75.

At his request, no services will be held.

George was born Oct. 24, 1937, in Roundup, Mont., to Lewis and Clara (Harris) Klinger. He served in the U.S. Army.

In 1958, George married Carole Baker at Fort Ord in California.

George was an auto body instructor at Mt. Hood, Clark and Clackamas community colleges and an arbitrator for Portland Auto Auction for more than 20 years. He enjoyed hunting with his buddies and working in his shop.

George was preceded in death by his son, Kris Klinger. He is survived by his wife; daughter, Dawn Klinger; brothers, Jerry and Glenn Klinger; and several nieces and nephews.  

Bateman Carroll Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Donations may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association or a charity of choice.

Vincent Alan Murphy Sr.

Aug. 3, 1950-Aug. 14, 2013

Gresham resident Vincent Alan Murphy Sr. died Wednesday, Aug. 14. He was 63.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, at St. Henry Catholic Church. 

Vincent was born Aug. 3, 1950, in Seaside to Donald and Audry (Waters) Murphy. He was raised in Portland, graduating from Franklin High School in 1968.  

Vincent enlisted with the United States Air Force. On Jan. 2, 1971, he married Christine Walsh in Erith, England.

After the couple returned to Oregon, Vincent worked for the state military department.

He is survived by his wife; son, Vincent Murphy Jr.; daughters, Kerry Murphy and Katie Kollar; mother; brothers, Larry and Kevin Murphy; sister, Lori Reeder; and five grandchildren.

The family suggests contributions to lung cancer research through the American Cancer Society or to the Oregon Humane Society.

Gresham Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.

Marilyn Gail Becker

Aug. 6, 1941-Aug. 14, 2013

Troutdale resident Marilyn Gail Becker died Wednesday, Aug. 14. She was 72.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, at St. Anne Catholic Church, 1015 S.E. 182nd Ave., Portland.

Private inurnment will be held at Willamette National Cemetery.

Marilyn was born Aug. 6, 1941, in Waterloo, Iowa, the only child of Robert Ernest and Mae Alice (Silver) Melberg. She graduated from Holy Child Academy in 1959.

On Nov. 26, 1960, Marilyn married Jay Harmon Becker in Portland. She worked for J. Frank Schmidt Nursery for more than 20 years, retiring as a personnel manager.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her son, Jay H. Becker IV. She is survived by her husband of 53 years and her daughter, Brenda Becker.

Carol Ann Hernandez

Nov. 15, 1935-Aug. 13, 2013

Sandy resident Carol Ann Hernandez died Tuesday, Aug. 13, at Portland Adventist Medical Center. She was 77.

A graveside service was held Saturday, Aug. 18, at Firhill Memorial Cemetery.

Carol was born Nov. 15, 1935, in Sandy to Henry and Lena Haselwander.

She attended Sandy High School and worked as a homemaker.

Carol was previously married to Bernard McManus. In 1987, she married Herbie Hernandez.

Carol loved being with her family, at the beach and in the outdoors.

Carol was preceded in death by her daughter, Pamela McManus; ex-husband; and three brothers, Bob, Henry “Hank” and Kenneth “Bud” Haselwander.

She is survived by her husband; sons, Mark and Matt McManus; daughter, Michele McManus; brother, Jack Haselwander; sister, Linda Whedon; and three grandchildren.

Ronald Loren Toby

June 18, 1968-Aug. 13, 2013

Gresham resident Ronald Loren Toby died Tuesday, Aug. 13, in Newberg after falling out of a pickup truck. He was 45.

Visitation will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, at Gresham Memorial Chapel.

A celebration of life will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, at Rockwood Grange Hall, 18303 S.E. Stark St., Portland.

Ronald was born June 18, 1968, in Portland to Pamela Strode and Norman Toby. He attended David Douglas High School.

A beloved father, son and friend, Ronald is survived by his daughter, Raquel Toby; mother; former spouse, Susan Toby; and stepchildren, Chanelle Jourdan, Crystal Jourdan and Ashley Joaquin.

Myrel Garretson Fuller Rose

Sept. 28, 1924-Aug. 14, 2013

Gresham resident Myrel Garretson Fuller Rose died Wednesday, Aug. 14. She was 88.

Interment will be held at noon Tuesday, Aug. 20, at Willamette National Cemetery.

Myrel was born Sept. 28, 1924, in Oklahoma to Daniel Lee and Sarah Edna (Cherry) Garretson. She attended Phoenix High School in Phoenix, Ariz.

Myrel served in the Navy WAVES during World War II before working as a beautician, cook, waitress and pharmacy technician. She married Don Rose on Aug. 24, 1946, in Reno, Nev.

Myrel was an avid collector of fancy buttons, traveling to state and national button shows and earning blue ribbons for her background in historic buttons.

She and Don traveled extensively after retiring, spending many winters in Quartzsite, Ariz., and the Phoenix area.

She is survived by her husband; son, Dave Williams; daughters, Donna Ostrin, Marla Ireland and Norma Rose; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Myron D. Tupper

June 4, 1921-Aug. 14, 2013

Damascus-Boring resident Myron D. Tupper died Wednesday Aug. 14. He was 92.

Service plans are pending.

Myron was born June 4, 1921 in Alberta, Canada.

James David Kerr

Gresham resident James David Kerr died Monday, Aug. 12. He was 87.

Shirley Hays

Shirley Hays

A memorial service for Fairview resident, Shirley Hays will be held on Saturday, August 24 @ 1:00pm @ GRESHAM MEMORIAL CHAPEL. A reception will follow the service at the chapel.

Shirley died on August 17, 2013 in Portland at the age of 76.

Shirley Hays was born on April 2, 1937 in Nottingham, England, one of four children born to Joseph W. & Mary (Rimington) Raynor. Shirley grew up in England. During her many years there she owned & operated “Westbridgeford School of Motoring”. She operated the business for 9 years and was one of the instructors.

In 2002, she met John Hays in a Christian Chat Room and in 2004, Shirley came to the U.S. on December 4th of that same year, they were married in Gresham at the Powell Vista Apartments where John was living at the time. After their marriage Shirley was a homemaker.

She enjoyed gardening and was a member of “Radiant Church” here in Gresham. She was very active in their “Home Group Meetings”. Shirley was preceded in death by John in 2010. She is survived by her brother Kenneth Raynor of Nottingham England. Sisters: Margaret Bowler of Michigan, Susan Dobson of Nottingham England.
