Gresham Breakfast Lions Club recently held its annual scholarship dessert at Guide Dogs for the Blind’s campus in Boring, awarding $7,650 in scholarships to high school students.

More than 150 award recipients, parents, club members and guests attended the 28th annual event, which honors academic excellence, vocational education and volunteerism.

The Lions event also assists students from Barlow, Gresham and Springwater Trail who are sight or hearing challenged.

Nine students received scholarships of $850 to the school of their choice, with 26 students receiving plaques for their academic achievements.

During the dessert, keynote speaker and Mt. Hood Community College President Debbie Derr spoke about the importance of education in their future, while Lions Club President Steve Solcz said, “These young adults are our best and brightest.”

The Gresham Breakfast Lions Club has donated $227,400 in scholarships during the past 28 years.

Since 1917, Lions clubs have aided the blind and visually impaired and made a strong commitment to community service and serving youths throughout the world.

The Gresham Breakfast Lions Club has 46 members and meets at 6:45 a.m. Thursday mornings at M&M Restaurant in downtown Gresham.
