OSU launches free online ELL course

Oregon State University will launch its first massive, open online course, or MOOC, partnering with Stanford University and the Oregon Department of Education to deliver a free, professional learning opportunity.

The eight-week course, Supporting English Language Learners Under New Standards, is funded by the Oregon Department of Education and begins Oct. 1.

The developers and instructors of OSU’s first massive course expect widespread participation, potentially reaching thousands of K-12 educators in the state and around the world.

Centennial School District selects new board members

Brenda Clark and Jovan Young have been selected to fill two Centennial School District board positions that were recently vacated.

The swearing in for Clark and Young will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, at 18135 S.E. Brooklyn St., Portland.

Clark, the current Position 3 at-large board member, was selected to fill board position 5, Zone 3, held by Tim Cook, who resigned, as he and his family are moving out of the district.

Clark, who is retired from Oroweat Bakery, has served on the Centennial School District School Board since 2007, has been a leader for Centennial Little League and volunteered at Pleasant Valley Elementary School.

The School Board chose Young, a manager for a residential treatment home, to fill the position 3 at-large position. Young is in the master’s of real estate development program at Portland State University.

She has served on the Centennial School District’s budget committee and on the interview panel for the director of human resources/assistant superintendent position.

In addition, Young has participated in the district’s African-American listening sessions.
