BOYS TENNIS - Bruins beat David Douglas in a dual that comes down to the final match
The Barlow boys tennis team took the long road to the Mount Hood Conference regular-season title, finishing off a hard-fought 5-3 win over David Douglas under the lights Wednesday night.
The dual between top contenders was originally scheduled two weeks earlier, but a soggy spring season forced the teams to complete the match in parts getting in a match or two whenever the sunshine would allow. In all, it took the teams four days before a winner could be declared, and even that was put in jeopardy as the rains came again late Wednesday afternoon.
Barlow had the Scots on the ropes needing just one more win to clinch the team victory when the teams convened at David Douglas High. But the action lasted only five minutes before the rains drenched the courts once more - just long enough for the Bruins Caleb Cox to take a 4-3 lead in the third set at No. 3 singles.
The outdoor courts were now useless, but the coaches were determined to get a result before turning in for the night. That meant a caravan down Division Street where the dual finished on an indoor court at Cascade Athletic Club.
