Girls tennis title comes down to doubles finale
Barlow wins the league crown, sends a pair of doubles teams to this week's state tourney
PORTLAND - The entire season was on the line when the Barlow doubles duo of Alex Kelsey and Becky Sheller took the court for the final match of Wednesday's district tournament hosted by Eastmoreland Racquet Club.
A win would give Barlow the Mount Hood Conference trophy, a loss would mean they would be co-champions alongside Central Catholic.
'We were too greedy to share it,' Kelsey laughed.
The Barlow duo had little trouble in the final, scoring a 6-1, 6-2 win over No. 2 seed Jacqueline Sheridan and Molly Moran of Central Catholic.
In fact, the most difficult part of the match came in trying to survive the celebration. After Kelsey chased down a return in the back corner for match point, Barlow coach David Hunt locked arms around the players in a post-match embrace, and the girls bonked heads in the process leaving Kelsey with a bloody nose.
It was cleaned up in time for the team trophy photo-shoot.
