The San Antonio all-stars hold off Parsippany, N.J., for a 5-2 win in Friday's first round at Little League World Series

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - McCallisters Jordan Cardenas is greeted at home plate after hitting a shot over the center-field fence to lead-off the first inning Friday.WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — McCallister, an all-star team from San Antonio, Texas, got off to a big start Friday afternoon.

Jordan Cardenas sent a leadoff home run over the center-field fence in the first inning, and the Southwest champs went on to beat Parsippany, N.J., 5-2 in the first-round game of the Little League World Series.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Cardenas said. “I never thought I’d hit a home run in Williamsport, and it happened in my first at-bat.”

McCallister’s Tyler Vitt connected for a double in the second inning and came around to score on the play when a Parsippany outfielder misjudged the ball. Another error later in the inning allowed the lead to grow to 4-0.

Parsippany tried to scratch its way back into the game with two runs in the fourth inning and the bases loaded with only one out. But McCallister maintained its lead when Cardenas struck out a batter and an infield grounder provided the final out.

Parsippany went down in order the last two innings.

The Gresham Nationals, who also lost their World Series opener on Friday, face an elimination game against Parsippany at 5 p.m. PT Saturday.
